According to Hubbard, Rice and Beamish (2008), the external environment is the factors outside the organisation that influence strategy and is made up of two environments; the macro-environment and the industry environment. The macro-environment includes the general factors that affect growth of an industry, whereas an analysis of the industry environment determines the profitability of an industry. An analysis of the Gold Coast theme park industry environment will determine the industry’s profitability by analysing the strength of the following five forces; the threat of new entrants, bargaining power of suppliers, bargaining power of buyers, power of substitutes, and the intensity of industry rivals (Hubbard, Rice Beamish 2008; Porter 1980). Due to the strength of these forces being quite low, the analysis of theme park industry on the Gold Coast indicates a profitable industry. The threat of new entrants into the Gold Coast theme park industry is determined by the strength of the barriers to entry as well as the expected retaliation. Such a barrier to entry is product differentiation which means that ‘established firms have brand identification and customer loyalties, which stem from past advertising, customer service, product differences, or simply being the first into an industry’ (Porter 1980, 9). Therefore, for a new firm wanting to enter the Gold Coast theme park industry would need to invest in building a brand name as a way of trying to overcome existing customer loyalties to the other theme parks. This would require large capital requirements for up-front advertising which would be unrecoverable and along with the unknown brand name would indicate a significant barrier to entry (Hubbard, Rice Beaming 2008). The low threat of new entrants is also strengthened by the fact that all the theme parks on the Gold Coast are owned by two companies. Dreamworld and White Water World are owned by Macquarie Leisure Trust Group and Village Roadshow owns Warner Brothers Movie World, Wet ‘n’ Wild Water World, Sea World, Australian Outback Spectacular, and Paradise Country (Roller-Coaster 2008B, Online). This effectively means that any potential new entrant would be competing against two companies who have the established resources which would enable them to try and drive the new entrant out of the industry through increased advertising or by lowering their prices (Porter 1980). The strength of the possible retaliation as well as product differentiation and large capital requirements determine that the barriers to entry into the Gold Coast theme park industry are quite substantial and therefore the threat of new entrants is quite low. The bargaining power of suppliers could also have an impact on the profitability of the theme park industry on the Gold Coast (Hubbard, Rice Beamish 2008; Porter 1980). One factor that influences the power of suppliers is the supplier concentration relative to industry concentration (Hubbard, Rice Beamish 2008). In other words if there are a small number of suppliers then the suppliers are going to have the power. In terms of theme parks, the main input that needs to be supplied is the rides. These are the inputs that theme parks market their parks around and what attracts visitors to these parks. The bargaining power these roller-coaster suppliers hold over the theme park industry on the Gold Coast is quite weak due mainly to the large number of roller-coaster manufacturers that are located all around the world. If a theme park requires a roller-coaster to be designed for their park, the firm are able to choose between over 40 manufacturers to design their ride so as a result the power of the supplier is quite weak (Coaster Gallery 2008, Online). Furthermore the bargaining power of suppliers in the theme park industry is weak due to theme parks being roller-coaster manufacturers only industry in which they can sell their product. Therefore for the roller-coaster manufacturers, the theme park industry is an important customer and their fortunes are ‘closely tied to the industry and they will want to protect it through reasonable pricing and assistance’ (Porter 1980, 27). For the theme park industry on the Gold Coast this low level of power held by the roller-coaster suppliers means that any of the theme parks will be able to discuss their needs with a number of manufacturers due to the large number available to choose from and due to the suppliers reliance on the theme park industry to sell their products, prices will be reasonable which will also be helped by the fact that there is large competition between the suppliers due to their numbers. The profitability of the theme park industry on the Gold Coast can also be impacted by the bargaining power of buyers (Hubbard, Rice Beamish 2008; Porter 1980). One factor where the bargaining power of buyers is low is the industry concentration relative to buyer concentration. The theme park industry on the Gold Coast is quite large with seven theme parks located within the region; however these seven parks are owned by only two companies; Macquarie Leisure Trust Group and Village Roadshow (Roller-Coaster 2008B, Online). Therefore due to there only being two companies within the region, the amount of competition between the parks isn’t as fierce as it would be if each park had a different owner. For this reason the buyer doesn’t have as much power against each park based on price. This being said, the buyer still has the power to choose one company over another which provides the buyer some degree of power but not as much as would have been attributed to them with more than two companies. In the Gold Coast theme park industry, the decision makers’ incentives do give buyers a degree of power (Hubbard, Rice Beamish 2008; Porter 1980). Such incentives are prevalent in the industry and are aimed at enticing customers to each company’s respective theme parks. Village Warner offers â€Å"3 Park Super-passes† which provide customers unlimited entry into Movie World, Sea World and Wet ‘n’ Wild for 14 days at a discounted rate. Also Macquarie Leisure Trust Group offers a â€Å"World Pass† which provides customer’s access to both Dreamworld and White Water World at a discount rate. These incentives offered within the Gold Coast theme park industry gives buyers power to choose between the companies based on the perceived benefits of which they are offering. Therefore if one of these offers isn’t perceived to be as valuable as the other offer then the buyer has the power to choose one over the other which can have an impact on the company’s profitability either positively or negatively. The power of substitute experiences can also have an impact on the profitability of the Gold Coast theme park industry (Hubbard, Rice Beamish 2008; Porter 1980). The intensity of this power depends on a number of factors which includes the relative price/performance of the substitutes (Hubbard, Rice Beamish 2008; Porter 1980). This involves comparing the relative performance of the industry to the available substitutes as well as comparing the relative prices, both of which can impact on whether the industry in question or its substitutes better meet the needs of the potential consumer. In relation to the Gold Coast theme park industry, the performance aspect expected of their experience could be to have â€Å"fun†. Therefore, the possible substitutes of going to the beach, movies or shopping most likely wouldn’t meet the performance desired in comparison to going to a theme park. However, if the performance desired by potential customers was â€Å"thrill-seeking†, sky-diving may be a strong substitute. Along with performance, price also needs to be taken into consideration. Therefore, the substitutes of going to the beach or movies are quite cheap, which makes their price performance quite strong. However, skydiving in comparison to theme parks is quite expensive so its price performance is quite weak in comparison to attending a theme park. Overall the power of the substitutes is quite strong especially with their price performance and can therefore have an impact on the Gold Coast theme parks industry’s profitability. The level of ease in which buyers can switch from the industry product to substitutes can also impact on the Gold Coast theme park industry’s profitability (Hubbard, Rice Beamish 2008). This factor provides a lot of power to substitutes because customers within the theme park industry can easily switch to substitutes such as the beach, movies or skydiving because they can simply just experience those products rather than go to a theme park, there is nothing holding people back from doing so. Due to this fact and the favourable outcome for substitutes based upon performance and price, the power of substitutes is quite strong. The final force which impacts on an industry’s profitability according to Porter (1980) is the level of industry rivalry. Industry growth rate is a factor that impacts on the level of rivalry because if the ‘industry is growing fast, the amount of industry rivalry will be relatively low, because there will be room for most or all organisations to prosper’ (Hubbard, Rice Beaming 2008). The theme park industry on the Gold Coast is still experiencing growth mainly due to the overall Gold Coast tourism industry growing with domestic visitors increasing 6% to 3. 7 million in the year ending June 2007, and international visitors increasing 3. 5% to 858,000 in year ending June 2007 (Tourism Queensland 2007, Online). As a result Sea World, Movie World, and Wet ‘n ‘ Wild increased attendances 17%, 4. 3% and 22% respectively, while Dreamworld’s attendances decreased slightly by 2% (Roller-Coaster 2007A, Online). Due to there still being strong growth in the Gold Coast theme park industry the rivalry isn’t as intense as it would with little to no growth and will therefore have little impact on profitability. Industry profitability can also be impacted if organisations within an industry have undifferentiated products (Hubbard, Rice Beaming 2008; Porter 1980). By having undifferentiated products rivalry would be extreme due to organisations targeting the same markets, whereas if products were differentiated the organisations within the industry would target different market segments. The theme park industry on the Gold Coast has traditionally been quite differentiated with a water park, movie-themed park, thrill-ride park and a marine-life themed park. As a result the different theme parks were able to target differing market segments which meant the rivalry between the parks was evident but not that strong. Today however the rivalry between Macquarie Leisure Group Trust and Village Roadshow has intensified due to Macquarie Leisure opening a water park called White Water World which is in direct competition with Village Roadshow’s Wet ‘n’ Wild. This has lead to strong advertising campaigns and discount offers by both organisations in an attempt to gain market share. Due to the opening of the new water park which has created two undifferentiated products in the industry, the overall industry profitability could be impacted because both Macquarie Leisure and Village Roadshow are going to be competing fiercely to try and persuade potential customers to come to their respective water park which could have been avoided if they have differentiated products with different target markets. By analysing the Gold Coast theme park industry using Porter’s (1980) five forces it is evident that the industry is profitable due to an overall low level of power attributed by most forces. The low threat of new entrants is evident due to the barriers to entry of established product differentiation and the expected retaliation of Macquarie Leisure and Village Roadshow. Also the power of suppliers is low due the large number of competing roller-coaster manufacturers and their reliance on the theme park industry, furthermore the power of buyers is low due to two companies owning all the theme parks on the Gold Coast which reduces the level of competition between the parks and limits potential savings for buyers and helps the industry’s profitability. However, profitability in the industry can be impacted by the considerable strength of substitutes based upon price and the ease of which customers can switch to these substitutes. Furthermore, profitability will be further impacted by the increasing competition between the two water parks in the industry as they fight for market share. Despite the presence of these forces on industry profitability, there strength is quite weak and the Gold Coast theme park industry will remain profitable due to the other forces outweighing any negative impact on industry profitability. The Red Badge of Courage :: essays research papers

The Red Badge of Courage, by it’s very title, is infested with color imagery and color symbols. While Crane uses color to describe, he also allows it to stand for whole concepts. Gray, for example, describes both the literal image of a dead soldier and Henry Fleming’s vision of the sleeping soldiers as corpses and comes to stand for the idea of death. In the same way, red describes both the soldiers’ physical wounds and Henry’s mental vision of battle. In the process, it gains a symbolic meaning which Crane will put an icon like the ‘red badge of courage’. Stephen Crane uses color in his descriptions of the physical and the non-physical and allows color to take on meanings ranging from the literal to the figurative. Stephen Crane begins the novel with a description of the fields in the morning: â€Å" As the landscape changed from brown to green, the army awakened, and began to tremble with eagerness at the noise of rumors† (1). The fog clears to reveal the literal green world of grass. It also reveals another green world, the world of the youth. Like school children, the young soldier tells rumors within the regiment. This natural setting provides an ironic place for killing, just as these men seem to be the wrong ones fighting in the Civil War. Stephen Crane says something on this in the narrative: â€Å" He was aware that these battalions with their commotions were woven red and startling into the gentle fabric of the softened greens and browns. It looked to be a wrong place for the battlefield† (26).  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Green is an image of the natural world and of the army’s youth, while red in the previous quote is clearly and image of battle. In the beginning, however, Crane uses red to describe distant campfires: â€Å"†¦one could see across the red, eye-like gleam of the hostile campfires set in the low brows of the distant hills† (1). Obviously, the fires are red, but Henry characterizes the blazes as the enemy’s glowing eyes. He continues this metaphor in the second chapter: â€Å" From across the river, the deep red eyes were still peering† (15). Crane then transforms this metaphor into arrogance used throughout the text: â€Å"Staring once at the red eyes across the river, he conceived then to be growing larger, as the orbs of a row of dragons advancing† (16). The red campfires come to represent eyes of the enemy, of dragons.

Privilege: Racism and Jim Crow Laws Essay

The essay â€Å"White Privilege and Male Privilege† written by Peggy McIntosh was enlightening and controversial. It was enlightening because she shows you how certain groups of people can have privilege over other different groups, and be unaware or in denial over it. Peggy’s story was controversial because it talked about the privilege that very few have the courage to talk about. The white and male privilege and the fact that it is looming over our heads as a society. Throughout history there’s a superior and inferior race and sex. The superior race is the white race, opposed to the African Americans who are considered the inferior. Additionally men are the superior sex opposed to women. Race is a sensitive subject when discussed due to the painful history of our country, most notably the plight of African Americans. African Americans have had a painful background of slavery and inequalities along with unjust rights they had to endure. They were not considered humans, but were property of their white slave owners. Racism has been social constructed for many decades. It is possible that the racial hierarchy can control many aspects of the human life. It can control what kind of jobs you receive, politics, media, insurance, and even your place of residence; this is reminiscent of the Jim Crow laws. Jim Crow laws were not only anti black laws but a way of life predominantly for southern people. The Jim Crow laws were constructed to keep African Americans from climbing higher on the social ladder. Education, transportation and work were kept at a bare minimum for African Americans. Under no means necessary was any African American to act as if they were equal to the white race. It ultimately controlled where they were allowed to go and what they were allowed to do. If for any reason this law was broken, consequences were normally enforced by physical force consequences for challenging whites and their authority. This was a way for the whites to maintain dominance and ensure the African Americans stayed at the bottom of the racial hierarchy. This was the cost for being born black. For being born into a society where your race was the ultimate factor in your social status, and rather than being born into a world of acceptance, you were born into a world of exile. This portrays in the United States the black and white color lines that have been imbedded into our minds and enforced due to the dominance of the white race for so long. Men also have advantages over women, especially politically. Even though times have changed and women are able to vote, men still are the dominating force in politics. Women have to fight longer, harder and be three times more qualified than a man to get some positions or to even qualify for jobs over a man. When some women are appointed higher positions over men they get criticized and sometimes even degraded because of it. Some men don’t even see or recognize when this occurs. Many white people are in denial of preconceived notions that they might have on a certain person or group because of their race. I myself have been a victim of racism at work. People choose to believe the color of your skin indicates your worth. Some expect you to fail and not succeed because of this. They expect you to meet the standard of the person they have seen on TV, in a movie, or on the radio. However, what they don’t realize is that these are stereotypes that the media portray of a certain group and that perception is not always accurate. They also take a bad experience with one individual, and deem an entire race that way. No one knows why we come in so many shades sizes and variations. However, we do know that the social concepts of race deprives from the history that one has come from. Race as well as the sex of a person was once used as a tactic of fear, fear that was instilled in a person to make them powerless and inferior to another race. Although many things have changed for the better in our society, racism and the sex of a person is still a dominate factor.

At level three, sourcing invites key suppliers to participate on collaborative designs and find solutions which match supply and demand. E-warehouse management and transportation management systems are introduced that enhance communication and provide visibility of items for supply chain partners. Marketing and sales enter the supply chain, by empowering key customers to self-configure products and services often through an i nteractive online portal. Business allies are working together to discover savings through mutually beneficial initiatives that reduce cycle time, achieve faster time to market and provide for effective use of assets. At level four supplier and customer collaboration blossoms as the business moves forward with its position in one or more networks. In this advanced environment, the company begins working in earnest with a select group of upstream and downstream partners. The objective is to establish a position of dominance in an industry for a particular network with the aid of the key end to-end constituents. New metrics appear such as on-time delivery, fill rates and returns in the customer satisfaction scores. With electronic information sharing, network members can readily identify opportunities to improve performance. Reciprocal visits breed a common bond and familiarise a company to become familiar with how the suppliers operation works, so their strengths and limitations can be better understood. Improving communication of all types is particularly useful if they are two-way. Preparing suppliers to respond rapidly to trends or knowing which product lines are moving rapidly or those intended to be discontinued is valuable information for the suppliers organisation. Use of a web site with information about the company and its procurement team is useful as is a supplier section where information of special interest to sup pliers is posted, like invitations to bid. Focus groups are a useful method of eliciting supplier feedback. Newsletters can be used to address the supply community specifically to help them understand better developments inside the purchasing organisation. Common vision As described by Ross (2004) in todays fast paced environment, while low cost and high quality are critical, the relationship that exists between buyer and seller that determines the real value-added component of procurement. The closer the demands and capabilities of customer and supplier are synchronised, the more total costs decline, and more agile suppliers become to meet complex demands, and the faster inventory moves through the channel pipeline. In addition, the more integrated the supply chain, the more partners can truly fashion collaborative relationships where their specific strengths can be used for mutual benefit to generate a common competitive vision. Discussion Deciding the most appropriate collection of components to supplier relationship is dependent on a number of aspects, which may evolve over time to full partnership. Good two-way communication, a dedicated partnering focus, careful monitoring, focus on mutual improvement and a common vision are vital, as are fair treatment and responsiveness on both sides. Conclusions The creation and maintenance of good supplier relationships is critical for competitiveness in the supply chain. There are numerous models and approaches which can foster this relationship, and the correct selection of approach is dependent upon the size, technical capability and cultural background of the supplier. In all cases information flows and good communication processes are appropriate, as is careful selection, measurement and progressive reengineering of the supply chain in a mode of mutual interest. Supply chain performance Definition As described by Turban et al (2006), a supply chain includes the organisations and processes that create and deliver products, information, and services to the customers. The term supply chain comes from the concept of how the partnering organisations are linked together. It follows therefore that for supply chain performance to contribute to business excellence, the performance of the entire chain depends on good relationship management between the partners. Technology A component of the supply chain in information and the technology to facilitate communication is vital to supply chain management since managing relationships with customers, suppliers and intermediaries is based on the flow of information and the transactions between these parties. Michael Porters value chain considers key activities that an organisation can perform or manage with the intention of adding value for the customer as products and services move from conception to delivery (Port er 1980). Electronic communications within the total supply chain can be used to enhance value chain activities such as procurement through the primary value chain activities such as inbound logistics, manufacturing, marketing and delivery, support and after sales. Internet technologies in the supply chain can reduce production times and costs by increasing the flow of information as a way to integrate different value-chain activities (Chaffey 2002). Information flows Many, if not most, of the supply chain problems that occur are the result of poor, inaccurate or untimely information flows. To be used constructively in business the supply chains information systems must be professionally managed. According to Handfield et al (2002), in todays competitive business climate, information and information technology are one of the keys to success, perhaps even survival of any supply chain management initiative. Metrics Turban et al (2006) relates that speed, cost, quality and customer service are the metrics which supply chains are measured. Consequently companies must define the measurements for each of these four metrics together with the target levels to be achieved. The targets levels should be attractive to the business partners. Stretch targets nay be useful, but hard to achieve measures may deter the concept of partnership. Internet High-performance supply chains have a positive effect on business operations or when not well managed have a negative impact. This is illustrated by McKeown (2003), who relates that in the fourth quarter of 2000, Nike had significantly reduced earnings because of problems with its supply chain system that caused it to produce too many unpopular shoes and not enough of the types in demand. In terms of the supply chain contributing to business success, Internet-based supply chain software systems make it possible to have constant and complete knowledge of a firms products from supplier to final customer. These syst ems provide this knowledge by displaying real time sales data, warehouse inventory, production plans and shipment schedules for everyone and every company in the supply chain. McKeown also states that the Internet can be used only for communication, not for actual shipment of goods. This view has been overtaken since by developments like those of the software industry which routinely advertises, conducts transactions and trades its product by making it available for download using the Internet. Time compression According to (Pearlson and Saunders (2004) time itself can give a business competitive advantage over its rivals. Dell Computers has developed a model of supply chain performance all the way from its individual suppliers through to an interactive capability with its customers. This enables a customer desiring a specific configuration of computer to receive that exact system within as little as five days, due to the time compression of all aspects of its supply chain per formance. It has to be said, however, that Dells success is due in no small way to its clever sales and advertising strategy, allowing for both direct purchase by the consumer and via retail channels. RFID tags Wal-Mart is utilising RFID tags attached on pallets from suppliers which they ship to the company. The RFID tag includes an antenna and a chip that contains an electronic product code (EPC). The EPC holds a lot more information than barcodes, and unlike bar codes, which need line of sight contact to be read, RFID tags are passive tracking devices, signalling their presence when they are within yards of a special scanner. RFID tags were expensive, but recently prices have dropped dramatically. The tagging of suppliers goods can have an immediate value in that RFID tags enable items to be read in batches, without line of sight or human intervention, which can reduce checkout times, inventory control and loss prevention costs. The short-term value that RFID can add along t he supply chain is through asset tracking and management, product recall and product-origin tracing. In the long term, collaborative use of RFID along the entire supply chain can help manage inventory efficiently with product fulfilment systems being demand-driven linking consumer behaviour back to inventory planning and logistics. Measures Supplier companies which measure themselves and are happy to have their performance measured are more likely to be constructive in performing business operations. According to Whittington and Dalaney (2007), performance measures can be financial or nonfinancial, and can include traditional performance measures found in financial statement and cost accounting systems, as well as performance measures on customer performance, supplier performance, environmental performance and others. A variety of performance measurement systems and frameworks are used in organisations. In the 1990s two performance measurement systems which emerged were the ba lanced scorecard and value-based management. Financial measures gauge performance, profitability, or costs and are expressed as financial amounts, ratios, or other forms. Nonfinancial performance measures are expressed in nonmonetary terms and include measures of customer satisfaction, customer retention, on-time delivery, quality, employee satisfaction and others. Characteristics Suppliers which measure their own performance in such a manner as to be understood by their employees are likely to be good business partners in supply. Good performance measures have several distinguishing characteristics: They are directly related to objectives and strategies. They are understandable. They are meaningful. They vary between locations and customer segments. They change over time. They provide feedback (Gattorna et al 2003). Supply chains are becoming increasingly complex in terms of their configuration and operations and their purpose. Performance measures need to reflect these compl exities in order to be realistic, but must be simple enough to be understood. Performance measures vary between locations and customer segments and this characteristic is particularly important in large organisations that have multiple products and services, categories, markets, customer segments and locations. Performance measures will also change over time as an organisation changes its operating strategies in accordance with successes and failures of past strategies, new technologies and operational advances, new product and markets, changing customer requirements and behaviours and changing corporate objectives. Acceleration of movement Suppliers who focus on accelerating of the flow of goods up the supply chain improves efficiency because inventory does not dwell in the chain as long, which brings down the cost of holding that inventory. At the same time, increasing the speed of inventory transition enhances flexibility because it reduces the time required to change the c ontents of the pipeline in response to changing demand. Faster transportation accelerates movement. If a company is sending goods overseas by ship and have the option of using airfreight, a net benefit may be realised, dependent upon the cost. A more effective way to increase velocity is to improve the way the chain handles goods that are not moving. A study of how inventory moves across the chain, with an examination of each place it stops, with a view to finding ways of getting it moving again requires supply chain re-engineering, applying the techniques of just in time, and related processes. The elimination of activities that dont add value are those which dont change the product in a way that increases its utility to the customer, usually by changing either its form or its location to bring it closer to the needs of the customer(Taylor 2004). Tracking movement Tracking the movement of products through the supply chain is complex, but technology can greatly ease this probl em. Successful supply and distribution companies like Eddie Stobart have tracking systems which tell them where the items they are holding or moving are at any time. Supply-chain visibility systems, and event management software can remove the drudgery from this effort and automatically produce alerts for any slowdowns in the chain, identification technologies such as barcodes and RF tags can go even further by automating the entire process (Taylor 2004). Cash flow Suppliers who focus on retaining a viable cash flow are better equipped to help their purchasers. Accelerating the demand and cash flow along with supply means that the faster demand moves up the supply chain, the more quickly upstream suppliers can respond to changes in demand, and accelerating the flow of cash reduces the total cost of debt across the chain, further improving efficiency without impairing flexibility. Cisco systems use instant payment in its supply chain to help suppliers offset the cost of rapid d elivery (Taylor 2004). Risk pooling Pooling the risk of failure to supply by spreading the requirements among others avoids disruption to the supply network. Risk pooling reduces inventory requirements by combining the management of inventories that would otherwise be controlled separately so that variability in demand can be managed with less safety stock. Multisourcing pools the risk. In situations where each facility can receive goods from two or more upstream facilities, then the inventories of those facilities automatically form a risk pool that reduces the need for safety stock. Transhipment can also achieve risk pooling by having the facilities at a given point of the chain exchange inventory among themselves. This technique of more expensive than multisourcing, but is sometimes the only option. In retail, this is often the case as there are no downstream facilities to receive merged shipments. Direct shipment is where one or more of the links in the supply chain is byp assed with goods being shipped directly from the central warehouse to a retail outlet, skipping the regional warehouse. This avoids the cost of moving through a staging facility, including time and costs of unloading, storing, retrieving and reloading merchandise. Designing for supply by taking manufacturing requirements into account during the design process, companies have simplified production. Design for supply also includes packaging, and a particular example is ready-to-assemble furniture such a desks and shelves, which requires the final assembly to be performed by the customer (Taylor 2004). Human aspects According to Trent (2007) many organisations have transitioned from traditional purchasing to a strategic supply model and as a result have had have had a major turnover of personnel. The knowledge and skill set required to succeed in supply management is very different from the knowledge and skill set required for success in a transactional purchasing environment. Ha ving the right people with the appropriate skills dealing with supplier relationships is critical for the attainment of supply chain competitiveness. Adaptive networks Integration of all supply chain and other support systems and processes both within a company and across trading partners is needed for full supply chain visibility and flexibility. This can be accomplished by the creation of an adaptive supply chain network. These integrated, flexible networks of companies, technology tools, and processes focus on customers and their changing requirements. An effective adaptive supply chain network is characterised by is its ability to respond to changes in real time, allowing the network to prevent or minimise supply chain problems. When adaptive supply chain networks are established, companies will move from forecast-driven to demand-driven supply chains Coyle, et al 2009). 214 Future In future pervasive automation, involving RFID, wireless communication, adaptive suppl y chain networks that do not require human intervention will support supply chain innovation, avoiding supply chain disruption and fundamentally alter the way items are produced, warehouse, and distributed. Managing product flows across the supply chain will also become much easier as item-level traceability and exception management will be facilitated by RFID sensors, and automated machine-to-machine communications will speed information flows (Coyle at al 2009). Transformation The case of Apple Computer personifies many of the components of supply chain performance improvement that contributed to business improvement. Apple Computer which was in difficulties in 1997, made a great comeback through a steady stream of impressive new and innovative products such as the iPod, iPod Nano, and iPhone. Apple pursued an array of purchasing and supply chain activities to manage product demand, inventory investments, channel distribution, and supply chain relationships. The company redu ces its product line by almost half, forecasts sales weekly instead of monthly with daily adjustments to production, and relied on suppliers to manage inventory for standard parts and components. Apple also formed a partnership with a supplier to build components close to an Apple facility with just-in-time delivery, created a direct ship distribution network through the Web, and simplified its finished good distribution channel. Because of these activities, Apple now rivals Dell Computer in terms of supply chain performance. (Monzka et al 2008). Conclusions The measurement of supply chain performance and its contribution to business excellence is characterised by complexity. Overall business performance itself and the transformation of business strategy depend on flexibility and speed of change within the supply chain especially in a business environment which is itself facing uncertainty. The most successful improvements in business performance come from an examination of a whole range of components in the supply chain, and their subsequent optimisation, rather than individual stages. In todays business environment, a common them for improvement is speed and flexibility of the supply chain. Successful examples come from total reengineering of the traditional supply chain tied to close business partnerships.
