Clemons Blacks in the Revolutionary War2 Looking back at the history of the United States, it is evident that the Revolutionary War impacted the country a great deal. It was the first war fought with slaves thanks to Lord Dunmore’s controversial proclamation. Historian Benjamin Quarles stated â€Å"The Negros role in the Revolutionary War can be best understood by realizing his major loyalty was not to a place nor to a people but to a principle. There were black loyalists, black sailors, black patriots and black regiments who fought and died in the name of Independence. It has been estimated that over 5,000 African Americans served as soldiers for the Continental army and more than 20,000 fought for the British cause. Slavery in Colonial America is noted to have begun in 1619 with the arrival of 20 African slaves on the Dutch ship named Man-of-war. The slaves made up over half the population in the colonies although they were seen more so as property instead of people. In 1776, there were about 500,000 African American men, women and children slaves. Everyone had a reason for taking part in the war. There were factors that motivated the blacks to take part in such a battle as well. The text mentions that when it came to fighting between the Patriots on one side and their Loyalist American allies on the other, African Americans joined the side that offered freedom. Having that choice of gaining freedom in exchange for serving in the military was indeed motivation. Other motives for blacks were the Blacks in the Revolutionary War3 desire for adventure, belief in the justice and the goals of the revolution and the possibility of receiving a bounty. The Continental navy and The Royal Navy signed blacks into the navy because of the manpower shortages at sea. Some blacks had been captured from the royal navy and used by the Patriots on their vessels. They also served as seamen on British vessel. Slaves and free slaves served as seaman. Because so many Patriot leaders resisted employing black troops, by mid-1775, the British had taken the initiative in recruiting African Americans. Revolutionary leaders feared using blacks in the arm forces. They were afraid that the slaves who were armed would uprise against them. In May 1775 the Massachusetts Committee of Safety put a stop to enlisting slaves in the armies of the colony. However, this did not apply to the blacks who were already serving in the army. 1775-1783 the navy recruits freed black slaves and runaway slaves. Lord Dunmore, born John Murray, was the last Royal Governor of Virginia. Because he was short of men, Dunmore issued a proclamation stating that all able bodied men to assist him in the defense of the colony, including the slaves of rebels. He promised freedom to the blacks who served. After doing so in a month he had 800 soldiers. The purpose of his Proclamation was to declare martial law and to encourage slaves of rebels in Virginia to leave their masters and support the loyalist cause â€Å"All indentured servants, Negroes, or others†¦free that are able Blacks in the Revolutionary War4 and willing to bear arms†¦Ã¢â‚¬  Such an act outrage Virginians. Those that took Dunmore up on his word range between 800 and 2,000. The Virginia Congress replied to his Proclamation with the Dunmore’s wasn’t as successful as his plan out, the number of his soldiers decreased due to smallpox outbreaks. Dunmore’s Proclamation was the first mass emancipation of slaves in American history. After the war ended, over 5,000 blacks left for Jamaica or St. Augustine because they were the property of loyalist that they would never gain their freedom from slavery. By 1786, many were back in bondage. There were those who were Patriots’ slaves but sided with the British were promised their freedom and was granted such. Many black patriots found that the post war military held no rewards for them. So many men served in the armed forces which meant that their wives were left behind and had to take on their husband roles. Their lives changed a great deal during the Revolutionary War. The women, who could, serve the Colonial military forces and interacted with the male soldiers in camp. They were usually the wives and daughters of the male soldiers. The cooked, did laundry and cared for those that were sick. There also some who fought in the military battles: Margaret Cochran Corbin and Captain Molly. Molloy’s husband had taught her how to load and fire cannons. Black women, many of whom were slaves, served both Americans and the British in the capacity of nurses, laundresses and cooks. Multiple Intelligences Thought out our lives, we are faced with many different learning experiences. Some of these experiences have made a better impact than others. This can be attributed to everyone’s different multiple intelligences or learning styles. A persons learning style is the method though which they gain information about their environment. As a teacher, it is our responsibility to know these styles, so we can reach each of our students and use all of the necessary methods. Howard Gardner, a professor at Harvard, introduced his theory of multiple intelligences in 1983. Multiple intelligence’s is a theory about the brain that says human beings are born with single intelligence that cannot be changed, and is measurable by a psychologist. Gardner believes that there are eight different intelligences in humans. The eight are verbal linguistic, visual spatial, bodily kinesthetic, mathematical logic, musical, intrapersonal, interpersonal, and naturalist. Understanding these intelligence’s will help us to design our classroom and curriculum in a way that will appeal to all of our students. We might also be able to curve discipline problems by reaching a student in a different way. One that will make more sense to them and more enjoyable. We can include all of the intelligences in lessons to accommodate all of the students’ different learning styles at once. By reaching each students intelligence we can assume that a student will perform b etter which, could mean students retaining more important information. A students learning style can also help lead them into a more appropriate career direction. As a teacher you can also learn your own personal learning style or intelligence to help improve the way you learn and teach. Gardner’s first intelligence is verbal-linguistics. A linguistic learner thinks in words. This person uses language to express and understand meaning. These learners pay attention to words and often express themselves through writing. Verbal linguists are skilled readers and speaking I one of their most important strengths. The traditional curriculum usually appeals best to this type of learners. Art is an area were verbal linguist excel because they are able to express their ideas on paper. The students who learn best visually are visual spatial learners. Home economic activities may also be good for the naturalist. There are several ways in which a teacher can accommodate every learning style by doing simple things in the classroom. Knowing and learning styles might be one of the most important things to learn from your students at the beginning of each school year. There are several tests out there that can help with this, but know each style is also important. Knowing your own learning intelligence as a teacher will also help you and is important. This allows you to know in which way you will best be able to absorb information that is important in our teaching. Longer School Days Schools are so much a part of our society, so the accurate length of school days is extremely important. Public opinions on the length of the school days are different. There are a lot of parents and professors concerned that it is hard for children to go to school early in the morning and stay there the whole day. On the other side, some professors try to force students into a nine hour school day. Not so many years ago, school was a main part of my life, and the school days’ structure and length affected my social life and ability to study. From my own experience and some studies that I have seen, students benefit if school days are long. Lengthened school days help to create a supportive environment for studying. After school, it is difficult for children to concentrate on homework. Many children’s homes are too crowded, and they are usually distracted by parents, friends, TV, or games. There are many other interesting things that they can do out of school, so students forget about what their teachers told them to study. Also, parents cannot help too much with their homework and only waste children’s time or give incorrect answers. My father tried to help me with a math course. I could not understand his explanations, because he was not a professional tutor. Finally, he confused me even more, and I had to make an appointment with my math teacher. In contrast, if children do their homework in school, there are fewer people and objects that distract their attention. Teachers and other hardworking students offer encouragement. At school, children have access to tutors and teacher’s aids. Sport’s a big part of today’s society, with hockey featuring highly. This is mainly due to the popularity of the sport within secondary schools and the national curriculum. With about 1150 hockey clubs in England, a National Governing Body (NGB) essentially organises the country’s hockey. England Hockey replaced the England Hockey Association (2002). It coordinates involvement and development with nationally run competitions and leagues. Much work’s also pumped into developing the foundations for future hockey: the young players of today. With high profile names involved in local schemes such as ‘Slazenger Stick Skills’, youngsters are encouraged to participate with rewards e.g. badges and certificates. The National Lottery helps develop all levels of hockey with funding via Sport England. It’s also in conjunction with the Youth Sports Trust and the Central Council for Physical Recreation. Through funding, Regional schemes such as Active Sports Talent Camps exist to develop the regions county and talented players. Lucazade often get involved with these local to territorial ‘stepping stones’. Locally, clubs such as Bradford and Halifax Hockey Club also exist and have junior teams to involve younger, future players. Local area teams like Calderdale compete against others, such as Wakefield, in developmental tournaments such as the Millennium Youth Games. This type of basic introductory competition promotes basic principals of hockey: fun whilst gaining experience and skill. Clubs receive private sponsors to fund kit, but main funding comes from the players i.e. hiring the pitch is paid for by subs. Some clubs may organise fund raising events such as ‘bag-packs’ at supermarkets. Sponsorship at national level is more serious with England Hockey leading the way in developing its image with investors such as Harrods and high status associations such as Great Britain Olympic Hockey and World Class Hockey. Hockey’s usually introduced at secondary school as part of the National PE Curriculum, but younger players may be introduced to junior sections of clubs through siblings etc. As a traditional sport that’s stereotyped for females (especially school level) private schools emphasise its’ importance by being in conjunction with local clubs to provide pathways for progression e.g. Bradford Girls Grammar School and Bradford Hockey Club. By regular club training and competition, a player may develop and be entered for local schemes/trials e.g. representing Kirklees in the West Yorkshire Youth Games. This can lead to scouting for county trials. Through higher standards of training and competition, development may continue and progression to a territorial level e.g. North England. Opportunities through trials and training weekends are provided and thus, following the pattern, international trials and competition. As seen by the diagram the different stages become more demanding with less players meeting the higher standards and progressing upwards. There’s ranging competition at all levels e.g. school- u12, to u18 and clubs varying from u11 up to numerous open age teams. Currently in England hockey is not a professional and therefore technically paid sport as it is in various other countries such as Holland. There is no provision for this level but with an increase of water based pitches and the senior men’s and women’s English hockey Leagues’ continuously improving standards of competition, the international scene is well established and provided for. By playing in the Senior National League a player has reached the top level of competition before international level, and thus it often leads to opportunities to trials for these highly developed players. There are however both male and female international competitions via club tournaments, and representative events for the England teams such as the Olympics, World and European Championships. Aside from the other agencies mentioned in connection with England Hockey the school link programme PESSCL partner the NGB to re-enforce participation in the education zone. They work together to implement it within secondary schools, but as yet there is no such scheme for primary schools such as ‘High 5 Netball’. This information is generally based on female participants but many clubs have male teams that are involved in national, regional and sub divisions. E.g. Sheffield has long standing, devoted men’s teams. Equality exists with popular, yet more social as most players are initially committed to gender specific teams. However colleges such as Greenhead provide for mixed team players and participate in regular competition. Although more profiled as a ‘female sport’ the National Men’s league has a higher status through more media and sponsorship coverage than the women’s league with early sponsors like ‘à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ Stretcher and much more consistent media coverage from Sky Sports.’ Although sparse, Zone Hockey is a full flowing scheme that provides access to hockey for the disabled. It can be played on an equal level with able bodied players and is simply and adapted version of the original. It was developed between Nottingham Trent University, the Youth Sport Trust and England Hockey. It’s widely supported by associations such as the British Wheelchair Sports Foundation. A 5-a-side game that is fully adaptable to different playing surfaces and wheelchairs, that provides all boys and girls with a high scoring, fast moving, fun game. However there is no involvement at an elite level such as at the Paralympics due to its sparse global popularity and no record of an international English representative side Evaluating the situation of Hockey within England, it’s fair to say there’s a solid structure that can still be built on. Equality exists within the sport to the extent of mixed teams, of which most major sports in England do not provide for at senior level e.g. soccer. Also disabled access exists and is strong in many parts of the country but not to the extent of international competition. However, without professionalism, Hockey lacks funding that marketing, TV coverage rights, ticket sales etc. could provide. Fantastic facilities become ever more prominent (e.g. water based pitches), there is surely a gap waiting to be filled that would provide more access and opportunity locally and nationally including disabled athletes. His major influences were his family (Tooth family) and his schooling (Winning Christian School) and these both fall into the Microsystems form Brotherlinesss Ecological Theory. Both of these contexts are in the Microsystems because they both are interactions that Michael had to come face to face with everyday and generally what the whole movie was about. Without his family Michael wouldnt have had the opportunities that he had when he was brought into the Tooth family as they helped push him to shape himself. Along with this are the teachers from Winning Christian School, especially Mrs.. Smith who helped Michael learn and understand the materials in a different way that the teachers taught in school. Together, both of these contexts then fall into the Microsystems of the theory as they both link together in Michaels life, influencing the other. Without Michaels enrolment at the school, he more than likely wouldnt have met the Tooth family and without the Tooth family Michael wouldnt have found the encouragement to play football and excel his grades in school to make him into something. The teachers influence on Michael was incredible, as well as his help from Miss. Sue. The teachers focused on ways to help Michael understand what they were teaching in school and without this interest in Michael, he himself wouldnt have been encouraged to learn or even want to continue with school as he had no understand of any of it with no previous knowledge as every public school he attended the teachers failed him to pass him off to somebody else. With the encouragement from his teachers Michaels grades bumped up from Ads and Ifs to Cos and higher. As well as Michaels time with Miss. Sue who tutored Michael his last year in high school to dramatically ring his GAP from a low standard to what it needed to be to be able to achieve a scholarship. She showed great interest in Michael as when he was about to give up hope on himself, she jumped in and gave him more hope. The one person whom I am sure deserves top blame in this situation, is the captain of the ship. Joseph Hazelwood was well beyond the legal blood alcohol limit while piloting the tanker. He was given multiple warnings by a shipmate that the ship was coming closer to shore every minute and something should be done. Nothing was. As the viewer later found out, Mr. Hazelwood had a long history of alcohol abuse and was checked in to a rehab center several years prior to the incident. Why, then, did Exxon continue to let him work there? His drinking history was a known fact and no one tried to cover it up before the crash happened. They are taken back in time where they must relive a fatal night and not change anything to make sure the nephew is born in the future. Cult films are my favorite type of movie. They are movies that I can relate to, like when my friends and I go out to parties and just have and forget about all our stress. I enjoy being able to watch a movie over and over again and still find it just as funny as the first time I saw it. Some people believe that Hot Tub Time Machine is not a cult film because they do not find it humorous because they cannot follow the plot. These movies have the kind of humor that teens are attracted to. I personally find the humor to be very enjoyable; my mother on the other hand hates the movie. She thinks the movie is wildly inappropriate and just down right stupid. She does not like when I watch it, and I find that ironic because the movie plot takes place during 1986 when she was young and partying at ski resorts as well. â€Å"You are sitting with these people you have never met, but by the end of the movie there is an energy-you are a community. † I find the word â€Å"cult† to resemble a negative meaning but at the same time a cult refers to a group. For example, multiple times during an ice sculpting competition a bell hop tries to throw his chain saw into the air and catch it in order to impress the crowd. Every time he tries he slips on the ice and miraculously it misses cutting off his arm. Later on in the future you see the same bell hop only older and missing an arm, only to find out he lost it doing something completely irrelevant. Stupid but funny, I know. Cult films are meant to be enjoyed and laughed at, and if you think about it they are meant to always be remembered. You do not really hear many people quoting movies with a serious plot line. Humor just may very well be the key to good advertisement. As a teen myself I appreciate cult films and the light hearted outlook on life they express. I enjoy being able to laugh and lose myself in a movie for a couple of hours or so, and watching Hot Tub Time Machine is one of the best ways I know how to do so.
